Tenders are invited for International Expert in Biodiversity and Protected and Conserved Areas
Gabon is a country in West Central Africa known for its high forest cover and low deforestation as well as rich biodiversity and substantial endemism. More than 88% of Gabon's surface area is still forested. Recent analyzes carried out in Central Africa highlight the substantial contribution of the Gabonese territory to the safeguarding of regional/global biodiversity, with strongholds for forest elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees, in particular thanks to the large forests still intact. These forests are, however, increasingly threatened by infrastructure, agriculture and land-use change, as well as the unsustainable extraction of natural resources such as minerals, timber and bushmeat - leading to deforestation and destruction. forest degradation, including the overall loss of flora and fauna, resulting in a decline in biodiversity and a significant increase in total carbon emissions.
As part of this project, UNDP Gabon in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Forests are looking for an international expert in biodiversity and protected and conserved areas in order to provide technical, socio-cultural expertise and advice. and policies on biodiversity conservation themes with a particular emphasis on forest landscapes and wetlands, and the engagement of communities and local populations for inclusive conservation.
Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and in close collaboration with the International Capacity Building Expert and the Assistant to the Resident Representative/Head of Programs, the Expert ) in Biodiversity and Protected and Conserved Areas will be responsible for providing technical guidance for the project on biodiversity themes. He (She) will bring his (She) knowledge and practical experience of ecological, technical and socio-cultural aspects as well as relevant policy perspectives in terms of biodiversity conservation, with a focus on forest landscapes and wetlands and community engagement and local populations for inclusive conservation. He (She) will advise on the good management of protected areas but also other types of territorial management aimed at the conservation of the territory ("conserved areas"), and will work closely with the Project Coordinator to identify how successful conservation models in neighboring countries could be adapted to the Gabonese context.
The duration of the mission is estimated at approximately 25 working days over a period of (1) year.
The proposal must be submitted directly to the portal no later than the deadline indicated: Friday December 8, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. GMT
